BIG BAND IN “CONCERT”


This concert, with Rosetta Robinson and Russ Simmons, features the swinging Kansas City sound of the Steve Miller K.C. Big Band. The band produces some of the finest contemporary big-band sounds to be found anywhere.

Dick Wright a noted jazz historian from the University of Kansas has described the concert as "Great songs, great arrangements, superb ensemble and solo playing from the band, and great vocals from Rosetta Robinson and Russ Simmons." Along with the big band features, they perform songs from the Cabaret Concert scored for the big band.

As a special treat, the band plays an extra dance set
and invites the audience to dance.

Get ready for a romp through jazz with Steve Miller K.C. Big Band - from the birth of the blues through the bawdy houses of New Orleans to Carnegie Hall in 1938, when Benny Goodman appeared in concert. That night, according to the New York Times, "Jazz became a lady". Until the end of World War II, the swing era ruled. Jazz became America's unique contribution to the world of music.

JAZZ TIMES is a lively multi-media presentation of the authentic sounds and styles of each period of this American art form, combining the Steve Miller K.C. Big Band with big screen images of the jazz greats, magically bringing them to life, along with dancers to recreate the vitality of the different periods.

The group features the exciting vocals of Rosetta Robinson and narrations delivered by Dick Wright, noted jazz historian from the University of Kansas.

The band retraces the history of jazz from ragtime to swing, from Louis Armstrong to Stan Kenton. playing the music of Count Basie and Duke Ellington and featuring songs such as Fats Waller's "Aint Misbehavin' " Benny Goodman's "Sing, Sing, Sing " Billie Holiday's "God Bless the Child" and many more.It's not surprising that the Steve Miller band offers superb interpretation of this music. Many of the musicians have played with the big name bands. First trumpeter Gary Richmond played with the Tommy Dorsey and Ray Anthony bands. Marshall DeMuynck, first alto sax, actually played with the bands of Benny Goodman, Clyde McCoy, Tex Beneke and Buddy Morrow. Jay Sollenberger, trumpeter, played with the Woody Herman, Stan Kenton and Buddy Rich bands. Todd Strait, drummer, has played with the bands of Woody Herman, Toshiko Akioshi and Marion McPartland. Featured vocalist Rosetta Robinson, recently sang with Doc Severinson and the Tonight Show Band.

The JAZZ TIMES show presents the greatest songs of jazz  jammed into one unforgettable evening. It's a wild trip and the Steve Miller K. C. Big Band hits all the stops along the way. The band has performed JAZZ TIMES at conventions, concerts, banquets and parties throughout the Midwest.
It is a musical experience that shouldn't be missed.

This concert presents the amazingly beautiful voice
of Rosetta Robinson, the swingin' talents of Steve Miller,
and the dynamic vocal stylings of Russ Simmons.

Whether expressing a slow expressive ballad or a rhythmic up-tempo show tune
or the blues, Rosetta captivates the audience. Professional musicians who have
worked with Rosetta compare her to Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, and
Aretha Franklin by. Rosetta is certainly one of the brightest
singing talents in the Midwest.

Rosetta Robinson grew up singing in a church choir in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, with her father and sisters. By the age of 12, her talents were so special that she became the featured singer in her family. Several years ago, Rosetta came to Kansas City, where she quickly made a name for herself in the highly competitive and demanding music industry. quickly made a name for herself in the highly competitive and demanding music industry. According to one music expert, Rosetta is "gospel, blues, and jazz all wrapped into one." Indeed, Rosetta s unique voice can handle virtually any type of music: popular, jazz, blues, gospel with amazing results. Following in the tradition of strong Kansas City female vocalists, such as Oleta Adams and Marilyn Maye, Rosetta pours everything she has into her performances, captivating each audience with the warmth other voice and personality. Words alone do not do her justice you must hear Rosetta for yourself.

Steve Miller played with many bands in New York City, including a stint at the famous Apollo Theatre. A graduate of Julliard, Steve came to Kansas City with the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra, performing and writing orchestrations. But he soon became more involved with pop and jazz music, developing his own band and concert programs.

 

Russ Simmons,
a native of Bonner Springs, Kansas, is an actor, singer and emcee. He received a degree in theater from Emporia State University and immediately began his performing career at Worlds of Fun in Kansas City. He has appeared in over 30 regional theater productions, including three seasons at Robert Redford's Sundance Theater at the famous Utah resort. He also toured Europe, the Mediterranean and Africa with various singing groups and has entertained troops in the Far East through the USO. For the last twelve years, he has been the vocalist for the Steve Miller K. C. Band, performing in numerous convention shows and concerts, including a stint at the World's Fair in Seville, Spain. Russ also writes film reviews for a Kansas City newspaper.

The Cabaret Concert is a sampling of acclaimed Broadway songs, pop tunes, jazz and ballads expressing the personality and moods of 20th century America. The musical review was created by the Steve Miller K.C. Band with vocals by Russ Simmons and the stunning Rosetta Robinson, who is called "The Jewel of Jazz" by the Kansas City Star. The Cabaret Concert also can be produced effectively with the Steve Miller K.C. Big Band

 

Our highly acclaimed Cabaret Concert
was first performed in the American Pavilion
at the 1992 World Expo in Seville, Spain.
